Welcome to Middle School at Green Fields
The Middle School, grades 6-8, is process oriented, students are directly involved in their education; they participate in aspects of their education as students, planners, initiators, facilitators. They are required to participate in athletics, performing arts, and visual arts and as a result, students acquire and gain skill in areas that they may not have realized before.
Enriched Learning in Middle School at Green Fields:
Encourages Contact Between Students and Faculty
Frequent student-faculty contact in and out of classes is the most important factor in student motivation and involvement. Green Fields teachers are genuinely concerned about their students. Knowing their teachers well enhances our students' intellectual commitment and encourages them to think about their own values and future plans.
Develops Reciprocity and Cooperation among Students
Learning at Green Fields balances a team effort with efforts toward individual personal best. Our classrooms are collaborative and social places which increase involvement in learning. Sharing ideas and responding to others' reactions sharpens thinking and deepens understanding in the Green Fields student.
Encourages Active Learning
Learning at Green Fields is not a spectator sport. Students at Green Fields talk about what they are learning, write about it, relate it to past experiences and apply it to their daily lives. They make what they learn part of themselves.
Gives Prompt Feedback
Appropriate feedback on performance is also an important factor in student commitment to academics. Green Fields teachers help students assess existing knowledge and competence. In the classroom, Green Fields students get frequent opportunities to perform and receive suggestions for improvement. They have numerous chances to reflect on what they have learned, what they still need to know, and how to assess themselves.
Emphasizes Time on Task
Learning to use one's time well is critical for Green Fields students who are typically involved in several extra-curricular activities in addition to their academics. Students get the help they need in learning effective time management. Allocating realistic amounts of time means effective learning for students and effective teaching for faculty establishes the basis of high performance for all.
Communicates High Expectations
Green Fields teachers expect more and they get more from their students. Setting the bar high is important for everyone -- for the poorly prepared, for those unwilling to exert themselves, and for the bright and well motivated. Expecting students to perform well becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.
Respects Diverse Talents and Ways of Learning
At Green Fields, we recognize that there are many roads to learning. Students bring with them different talents and styles of learning. Students get opportunities to show their talents and learn in ways that work for them. In this environment of familiarity and comfort, they are free to explore new ways of learning and new talents.
