The Dowling Library functions as the information center of the school, connecting students with ideas and information, promoting reading, and creating lifelong independent learners by:
- Ensuring physical and intellectual access to information and ideas.
- Providing library resources that represent a diversity of experiences, opinions, social and cultural perspectives.
- Creating and maintaining a collection that meets the interest as well as the informational and educational needs of the students and faculty.
- Offering a comfortable and caring atmosphere for individual and group study.
- Collaborating with teachers to integrate the effective use of library and information resources into the curriculum.
- Teaching students to develop critical thinking in their choice and use of information resources in all formats.
- Promoting a lifelong appreciation of literature and reading for pleasure.
Students are encouraged to use the library as a place to read, to research, to study and to explore the variety of print and electronic resources available.
Resources
The library has over 14,000 books, videos/DVDs, and magazine/newspaper subscriptions. The library also subscribes to a variety of online databases that provide access to thousands of full-text articles from reference books, magazines, journals and primary sources. In addition, the library subscribes to the online edition of Encyclopedia Britannica and Noodletools, an online bibliography composer. Online resources are available from library computers as well as from the links below.
Computers with a broadband connection are available in the library for use by students and teachers. A wireless broadband connection is available for personal laptop use.
The "College Search Room" in the library contains a variety of college catalogs, pamphlets, videos, and reference books to help you with your college search. The Green Fields Archive is also located in the library. This collection of school photos, artifacts, yearbooks, newspapers, literary magazines, historic documents and other miscellany is currently being organized and catalogued by students, faculty and interested alumni.
